What have we done???...

De BBC documentaire 'Earth from Space' kluisterde mij in 2019 aan de beeldbuis, met mijn camera in de aanslag. Wat is de aarde ook vanaf grote afstand van de satellieten die eromheen cirkelen, prachtig en fascinerend! Mijn zorgen om de kwetsbaarheid van onze leefomgeving waren na deze serie groter dan ooit.

Wat je vanaf satellieten heel goed ziet, is hoe het poolijs en gletsjers met een noodgang smelten. Vanaf de aarde zie je dat ook - ik zag dat zelf tijdens een hete zomer in Alaska - maar de omvang van deze door ons, mensen, veroorzaakte ramp is dan niet zo duidelijk...

Inmiddels worden we ook in Europa de gevolgen van ons (gebrek aan) milieubeleid duidelijk. De extreme droogte van de afgelopen jaren en de overstromingen in de Euregio Maas - Rijn in 2021 waren behoorlijk confronterend; ook voor mij.

Ik maakte foto's en selecteerde en schilderde enkele beelden die ik 'schilderwaardig' vond.

The BBC Documentary 'Earth from Space' held  me glued to the TV screen, my camera at hand. How beautiful and fascinating is our earth, also from the great distance of the satellites that circle it! My worries about the vulnerability of our living environment were greater than ever, after seeing this documentary.

From the great distance of the satellites, you can observe very well how the polar ice cap and the glaciers are melting very fast. You can see that on the earth, too - I saw the big melting myself during a hot summer in Alaska some years ago -but the size and the impact of this disaster that's caused by us, humans, is not so obvious then.

By now the consequences of our (lack of) a good environmental policy are becoming more and more clear; here in Europe also. The extreme droughts of the last couple of years and the floods in the Maas - Rhine Euregion in 2021 were considerably confronting; for myself, too.

I made pictures and selected and painted some of the images that I found worthy of painting.
